You can never go home.
12.31.08 (9:32 am)   [edit]

People get nostalgic at this time of year. Individuals long gone suddenly appear, like clock work. I guess an end, a benchmark of sorts, beckons even the less reflective to take a backward glance, to become wistful about what's come and gone and what's awaiting them in the new year.

It's a time of measuring.

It's a time of ghosts.

The souls of whom, ever skyward bound with every burst of firecracker, seem never to quite make it.

Or maybe I'm just being fanciful again.

I try to ignore calendars when it comes to sizing up how I'm doing. Of course, I ignore calendars on just about everything else, too. I don't buy into the idea of celebrating something because it's on the calendar; because it's when we're supposed to... I almost forgot it was New Year's Eve today, had it not been for the random soft popping of early fireworks ambling up the hillside.

These days, it's all about lists in the media. The year in photos, top ten this, top twenty that, most outrageous things of who said what about so-n-so, how many times, when and where. The year in music. The year in political gaffes.

Today, I'm thinking about playing badminton. We're headed for a breezy seventy degrees Fahrenheit with no clouds in the sky.

Yes, it's much better to focus on your real life, than on some media hype for sure!
- I do love to watch the ball drop, along with some fireworks though!
Hope you have a very Happy New Year!
- PG P)
Ps. - I LOVE badmitten - not too many folks seem to play it these days though - Have a great time! :)

hope you did play badminton on the day. My own new year eve was a bit dull affair after unable to find food because all the local restaurants had entries only for new year parties - and I certainly wasn't interested in one.
BTW, what's the title got to do with the post? I am pretty sure i am missing something

I'm guessing that means you don't or won't cook for yourself, eh? Sounds like the New Year holiday has a monopoly on your city. I think I'd stay home and have a dull evening too. The badminton got passed up for other activities, but it's still on the to-do list. I spent a lot of my new year day remodeling a bedroom - now who is the dull one? I fell asleep before midnight and woke up to the sound of firecrackers. :) As for the title... eagle eyes on you, Rizi. It has absolutely nothing to do with the post. It's a song that popped into my head, connected with a distant memory. A moment of randomness. I see you've been posting. Looking forward to reading more. :)))

funny story about badminton..

my brother broke his ankle playing it in high school phys ed a year or 2 ago. i'll never quite understand how that happened. i've taken a good whack or 2 in the back of the head by a bad partner, but, it's just not one of those ankle-breaking activities.

i too, don't really care to follow calender holidays. if you want to celebrate something, celebrate it. my wife however, gets into the spirit, and this new years she wanted to have a few drinks, so i took over primary baby watching duty and let her have a good time.. we fell asleep on the couch to a movie well before midnight.

hope you're well lindy, take care :)

Aww, Nate, it's so good to hear from you. I've been wondering if you'd wander back over at some point. I don't mean to laugh at your brother's misfortune, but it *is* pretty funny that he managed to break his ankle playing such a sport. That's like... I don't know... breaking your arm in cross country running. Heh... All is well on my end. I hope you can say the same. Sounds like baby Nate is keeping momma and daddy engaged and entertained. :))

oh, i could not have asked for a cuter, more well behaved baby.. the little guy has slept through the night since he was brought home, nothing really bugs him, short of being tired. he doesnt even notice his teeth coming in.. he likes eating peas.. i think everybodies first should be just like him, to 'ease' them into what it's usually really like, haha.
