And people wonder why...
03.24.08 (1:33 pm)   [edit]

I'm so adamantly opposed to setting foot in this place...

Supporting slime all across America

That they are within the boundaries of the law? Disgusting. Go Wal-Mart. Shop Wal-Mart. They're cheaper, right? Nothing to worry about, just move along back to your lives...

it would not play for me.. so wally world is suing a person they killeds family??

i disliked that store before..now i have even more reason to.

do you know that you can buy the passion of the christ there no problem.. but if you try to buy anything "new age" or "occult/pagan" you have to give id to prove you are over the age of 18...

their prices are too high and their products suck...

While I can't agree with agree with all of Wal-Mart's practices or policies I can say after watching the clip atleast 50% of the blame should be laid at the the doorstep of our judicial system. The courts upheld the store not once but twice. I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court will truly see that this is a very 'special' circumstance and justice will be served.

Ok I don't know how or why I managed to type 'agree with' twice! *sheesh*

Hey, Shannnon. Yeah, 'justice,' whatever that is... if justice were being served, corporations would not have the same rights as individuals. Did you know that the US was started with the core idea that individuals would trump corporations and that our government, both state and federal policed it to make sure it remained this way? One stupid judge decided corporations should have the same rights as people and since then, we've been reduced to slaves - that's right, slaves. We have no rights over corporations, they have the same rights as individuals, yet they do not have the accountability. If justice were being served, Wal-Mart wouldn't be as powerful as they are today and because they are, I disagree wholeheartedly with the idea that this situation could even exist. Sadly, many Americans have become so self absorbed that situations like this bounce in and out of their radar. It doesn't become a serious problem until it happens to them.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I don't even sneak in during the night when I need something and it's the only place open. It's a choice I've made. I wish others would peel back some layers and take a look at what that store is doing to us.

Yeah, I have difficulty with Yahoo clips too. It goes something like this: The woman worked for Wal-Mart. She opted in on health coverage with her employer. She was hit by a truck, specifically her brain took the brunt of the impact. She's permanently disabled. Wal-Mart health coverage paid for her medical expenses, but there's some tiny print, a small clause in her plan that says if she goes to court with it, Wal-Mart has the right to recoup their costs. In this case, we're talking about $300,000. So, Wal-Mart is suing this woman for the money they paid to cover her medical needs. They are perfectly within the limits of the law and that's the sick thing about it. Now, Wal-Mart spokespeople are saying things like, 'Oh, it's heartbreaking, and we feel for her, but the rules our health plan is bound to are very strict... blah, blah, blah...'

I love it when corporations claim their rules are strict, their hands are tied. What a bunch of BS, eh? They made the bloody rules, they can change them anytime. But you see, if they do, others will use that situation to also gain or profit, and I bet there are plenty of people out there who Wal-Mart has sued to recoup medical costs, this is the first time we're hearing about it.

Wal-Mart=death of the community.

Probably just as well, Mimi. It would break your heart. I've responded to Nightbreed and FinalyFree in my thread, if you'd like to get an abridged version of what happened. It's enough to make you sick!

I completely agree with the corporate gratuities and the unfairness of it all. I just can't understand how any jury could sleep knowing they are awarding monies to a huge corporation and jeopardizing the care of what for all intents and purposes is an invalid. With that said, I have to make one other point...

I live in a very rural area. I don't have exact figures but can say with a high degree of certainity that well over half of the households in this county are at or below national poverty level standards. These are hard working, many uneducated, simple people. They just want to live their lives and get by, which typically translates into 'living paycheck to paycheck'. I know in this particular county the Super Wal-Mart is the first choice of many who live here simply because they do get more for their money. I am blessed in the fact that I don't have to shop locally and usually don't, but for some of these people they don't have any other choice but Wal-Mart. And in the same vein, Wal-Mart is a blessing. Now I suppose one could make the point that locating in rural, financially depressed areas is just another manipulative tactic by Wal-Mart, and that may very well be true. But I would have to argue that atleast Wal-Mart can do it where other large retailers can't. I guess it's just another catch-22 situation huh?

I am not trying to defend any large corporation including Wally World and I personally think Sam Walton has probably rolled over in his grave numerous times since his passing due to previous and current store policies. From what research I've done on him he seemed to be a family man that wanted to provide a low cost alternative to the higher priced retailers--too bad that dream got lost in all of the shuffle.

Yes, very true, Shannon.. I think Sam Walton didn't see this happening and I'd like to think he wouldn't stand for it, though the rest of his family seems alright with it, including his daughter...

I do get the idea that impoverished folks really don't have much choice. The thing is, these corporations are very much destroying what little sense of community we have left... when folks couldn't make ends meet, the community was close enough that a little charity went a long way. We've done this to ourselves by allowing these large chains to become necessary.

I don't argue with the contingency that really can't do anything about their situation, but there's a good chunk of folks who can and simply don't. FYI, I'm paycheck to paycheck (with big hopes of not being soon)... I'd rather by used or dig through the trash than buy something from Wal-Mart - just saying! :)

By the way, as always, it's enjoyable to be able to go back and forth with you on these things. I know you'll shoot straight and accept the same from me. We do a good job of not getting defensive or condescending, I think. I dig that about you, ShanGran. ;)

Well thank you my dear, I always enjoy a good debate! And I hope that I don't come across as defending them, because I don't. And I much, MUCH prefer shopping anywhere but there, and luckily I can do that. I do hate it for the people that really don't have that choice. One of my fav places to buy household products and such is the good 'ol Dollar General Store. Not really sure how widespread the chain is but they are small stores with pretty competitive prices. They don't have groceries like the Super W's do but they do have some.

And we don't get defensive or condescending because we genuinely respect and like each other :) Even if nobody else does, BWHAHAHAHA!!

Haha, well said! And, no, you didn't come across as defending Wal-Mart, only the folks who don't have much choice but to shop there, which is not only understandable, but admirable too. We've got Dollar Generals around here too, and Dollar Trees and Family Dollar and every every dollar store under the sun. They do have some good deals, especially the ones that are true dollar stores! :)

The dollar store is a good store to go to and they treat their people decent.

that is disgusting.

it'd be nice if the government would just take care of health care, then people wouldn't have to worry about relying on someone more concerned with their yearly profits, than the general well-being of their clients.

i too, stay clear of walmart.

Good call, Nate, and spoken like a liberal (that's what you get called for daring to utter such notions).. uniform, national health care. It works for most of Europe and it works well. If dems get into the white house, we may have a shot at it, or a start anyway. I just hope this lady's situation garners enough attention that someone feels the need to step in and do some damage control by way of allowing the paid medical expenses to stand.

Glad to hear you're not a Wal-Mart shopper. They recently lost a big court case against an online blogger who was posting parody's of Wal-Mart. They tried to get him on copyright infringement, by - get this- claiming that the smiley face was theirs. The judge threw that out - booyah!
