Kitten Kaboodle.
08.28.06 (11:22 am)   [edit]
I usually write every few days in my journal. My tucked away one, that is. But this month, whew.. fuggetaboudit.

On August 9th, I brought home two kittens in need of a home. They were four weeks old and couldn't quite walk just yet. Their eyes were still dark and unfocused, and all they knew was that anything that felt or seemed like momma's tummy was where they wanted to be. You wouldn't believe how many different things feel and seem like momma's tummy. A pillow, my leg, my arm, Devon's leg, Devon's arm, a blanket, a couch arm, my nose, my foot, Devon's nose, Devon's foot and.. each other, of course.. they would scoot close, purr, and knead their sharp little claws to their heart's content. Devon and I found ourselves bottle feeding at odd hours, cleaning the occasional spill and, well, cooing like idiots.

Now that we've settled into a routine and have managed to ween Adderbury and Piddle off milk and on to solid food, they're beginning to resemble cats, rather than human newborns. The neediness is toning down and they are bounding around, delighting themselves with the world that is our downstairs of the town home.

With every step they take toward self sufficiency, they also take a step toward trouble. The back of the television is quite the jungle, full of cords and shady nooks. The dining room table and chairs (in the living room) are the most fascinating trees and scratching posts ever to be made. And under our bed (in the dining room) is the most fabulous adventure..

The sock bin. They can't get enough. They slide into it, wedge themseves between the socks and stay there for hours. This is fine except for the fact that that whole kitty litter thing? Yeah. They haven't gotten that down just yet. And it's my socks they happen to be cozying up to..

While using a kitty litter is pretty much second nature for cats, it's not automatic for 'new born' kittens. When they are actually sitting IN the kitty litter, they sniff around, a light bulb goes off and they do what they need to do. But they also do what they need to do when they are.. under the dining room table, sitting on the couch or standing in the kitchen. As long as they can find some semblance of cover, they are using the kitty litter whether there is kitty litter or not.

So, for the last three weeks, I've been eating with, sleeping near, feeding, playing with, protecting from slightly upset older cat, buffering from extremely eager children and generally caring for these two little fur balls who have us right where they want us.

Notice little Miss Adderbury is sitting on top of Piddle. She does that a lot.

These are the primary two reasons I haven't found much time to write. But I'm sure I'll be back to emoting, reflecting and the usual catharsis, lickity split.

Haha, oh yeah. You hit it on the head, Mimi. *giggle* These days, they've taken to standing in my face, and licking my nose. Hope you're doing well, madam.

Cuuuute. A month is young to bring them home isn't it? Was the Mom hurt or killed? Hope not. I want one that stay's a baby forever.

Indeed, a month is very young. Her momma was chased off by a rather large dog (his head came up to my ribs and I'm 5'9"). I suspect there may have been another kitten, and that momma cat grabbed the first one within reach and made a beeline for it. I didn't dare separate these two. A kitten who stays a kitten forever.. wow. As wonderful as it sounds, I would only agree to such a thing if I could pick the age down to the week! At four weeks, it's just too bloody much work! I suppose I ought to be grateful that there weren't any labor pains involved. :)

Not only does the name "Piddle" ROCK, but Piddle is completely adorable. Not like Adderbury isn't, but I seem to be particularly fond of Piddle.

I'm glad that they adopted you. :)

I hear you on that one, Sir. Piddle earned his name the day I brought him home. I was babbling about names and my fondness of the town of Adderbury, England. Devon was holding our little 'runt of the litter,' looked down and said, 'He just piddled on me. Uh, let's call him Piddle.' And the rest, as they say, was history. Piddle's so laid back and calm compared to high strung, dominant Adderbury. He's just plain loveable. I'll post another picture of him that will surely make you smile. :)

As a bonafide 'non cat person' I must say they are precious! Who couldn't love a kitten? heh. I wish I had visited quaint little English towns that I could name my pets after :( It's no wonder we ended up with animals called 'Tater Tot' and 'Earl', heh!

Okay, 'Tater Tot,' now that's just plain cute. And 'Earl'... like it, like it.. Devon and I were tossing around potential (human) baby names and Earl came up for both a girl and a boy. Devon's last name is Grey. *giggle*

Of course, we also toyed around with 'Blackin,' 'Bluen,' 'Dorian,' 'White Ann,' and Poupon. We are sad creatures.

Jacob actually named Tater Tot at age 3, incidentially tater tots were one of his favorite foods, lol. And Earl, well Earl was originally named Ariel when we thought he was female, lol. I tried to come up with something that sounded remotely like the 'Ariel's' he'd been listening to for months.

Hahaha! Niiiice! I've got a similar story involving a cat named Patty Cake. I was 9 when we found her, and we decided she was a boy because her name was clearly 'Pat' as evidenced by the smelly brown plastic collar that said 'Pat' (ent pending) - it was a flea collar and Mrs. Pat Cat was definitely not a boy. Hee hee.

From Arial to Earl. Priceless. ;)

LMAO--I love the 'Pat--what's with us and our gender confused felines? I don't know about you but I would have never guessed that Earl was a male, I did several inspections and saw NOTHING, lol. Then one day he walked through the living room and down the hall, there was no mistaking the two testicles between his legs! Maybe they hadn't 'dropped' before then? lol

Hahahaha, I know! When I picked up my two kittens, I was told they were both female, but a couple of days later I was like.. 'what are "those?!" I guess it takes a few days. :)

Hell it took months for me...what does that say about knowledge of male anatomy, feline and otherwise. LOL

I've got a 16 year old that weighs 9 pounds and enjoys sleeping turban fashion around my head. Enter the kitties and she's no longer doing that, so.. I guess I owe them one! Piddle is indeed a piddler, A. He tagged Devon on day one and nothing else would do but to name him that. These kitten things are a lot of work.. I can't imagine how much effort it would take for a puppy.. like lil' Beastie on Jen's blog, eh. Nice to see you round these parts. Thinking of the old days again, of course. :)

Lovely cuties :) Well, coming from a cat addict I suppose it's not that much, but they're adorable :)

Are those shining blue eyes I see on Adderbury?

Yes, ma'am. Her eyes are blue here because she's actually young enough that they hadn't changed yet. I'm not sure, but I think they will be a deep green color.. Piddle's eyes are still pretty blue as well. I'm not surprised that you are a cat lover. Could it be that introspective people are often drawn to them? Hmm. :)
